The first courses in Zoology were offered at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later, North Carolina State University) in 1899. In 1912, Dr. Zeno P. Zeno Payne Metcalf (1885-1956) was born in Lakeville, Ohio and was educated at Ohio State University. He received his A.B. degree in 1907 and came to North Carolina as Assistant Entomologist for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture in 1908. He joined the faculty of N.C.
